This question usually has a sub question of “Can I take my medications with a soda, beverage or without water?” However, this edition focuses on medicines and cold water. A number of people believe that taking your medicines with water at room temperature makes it work better and if taken with cold drink, it is harmful to the body and makes the medicine ineffective.
The normal body temperature is between 36.6°C to 37.1°C (97.9°F to 99°F while room temperature is about 25°C (77°F) and a cold drink willbe less than 16°C.
The answer to this question will depend on the type of drug or the nature of the illness treated. Some studies have shown that some drugs dissolve in hot water faster than in cold water but it does not translate to being beneficial when you swallow your medicines. On the contrary, some drugs may denature in hot water. For example, paracetamol in hotwater will dissolve faster but an ampiclox capsule or supplement gel will get denatured in hot water, hence the preference for cold water with capsules and softgels.
There are a number of technicalities in the production of drugs that will impact on the ability of the drug to dissolve fast, absorb and be effective. Therefore, to play safe, take your medicines with water at room temperature or simply ask your pharmacist.
